Deletion of P53 is one of the most serious aberrations. Since the interaction between ATM and P53 during cell damage-control and apoptosis of damaged cells is disrupted by deletion of one or the other of these genes, damaged cells can proliferate in the patient, unchecked, leading to a poor prognosis for the patient.
